Broad Institute Research Opportunity


Announcement:
The Broad Institute’s Diversity Initiative located in Cambridge, MA is launching an academic year research opportunity for students attending colleges/universities in the local area beginning February 2013 or earlier.If you are interested in exploring genomics and/or biomedical research, please read further and apply now!
The Broad
Broad scientists use genomic information to study human evolution, population and disease genetics, cellular networks, and the biology and evolution of pathogens. Our research draws on students and scientists from a wide variety of backgrounds, including: computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, molecular and cellular biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. The Program
Our academic year undergraduate research program funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is designed for underrepresented minority students with an interest in biomedical research. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 8 hours a weekduring the academic year in a laboratory at the Broad Institute, where they will perform original scientific research with a mentor.

In addition to a stipend (paid per hour), the program also offers a small research supply budget, and funding to present your research at local, regional or national conferences. The program also features components to support academic and career development. If eligible, students are encouraged to participate for multiple semesters.

Program Eligibility
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a four-year college with a graduation date of December 2013 or later, possess an interest in pursuing an advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D .or M.D./Ph.D.), and major in physical, biological, or computer sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Applicants must also be a US Citizen or permanent resident and a member of an underrepresented minority (African-American, Latino/Hispanic-American, or Native American).

New Scholarship

 Massachusetts High-Demand Professions Scholarship

The Massachusetts High-Demand Professions Scholarship provides financial assistance to students enrolled at public colleges and universities in Massachusetts enabling them to complete degree and certificate programs in order to transition into jobs in targeted high-demand occupations.

v The Massachusetts High-Demand Professions Scholarship can help you achieve your goal of postsecondary education by awarding between $1,000 and $6,500 per academic year (depending on what type of institution you attend and whether you are a full or part-time student) to be used for tuition, fees and other related educational costs.

v Scholarships are awarded to support part-time and full-time students pursuing associate or bachelor degrees in the following programs of study:

o   Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
o   Nursing and other health professions (e.g. Radiology, Occupational Therapy, Medical and Clinical Lab Technology
o   Elementary and Secondary Education (except Special Education)
o   Finance and Accounting
o   Certificate programs eligible for the scholarship will include: Licensed Practical Nursing, Dental Assistants, and Computer Technology

Eligibility

v Permanent legal resident of Massachusetts for at least one year prior to application
v Annually file the Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
v Enrolled in a state-supported undergraduate degree or certificate program
v Maintain a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0
v Complete the High-Demand Professions Scholarship application
v US citizen or an eligible non-citizen capable of receiving federal financial aid under Federal Title IV
